Treks in Khao Sok
What to expect when trekking in Khao Sok
A trek through the Khao Sok jungle is an experience that engages all the senses from the very first step. The air is warm and humid, almost velvety on the skin, and carries that intense scent of wet leaves and ancient wood that only rainforests possess. As you walk, you feel the soft, uneven ground beneath your feet, a mix of earth, roots, and smooth stones shaped by water.
The sounds are continuous and hypnotic. True silence never exists: there is always something moving or singing. Tropical birds with metallic calls, the sudden rustle in the leaves as a lizard scurry away, the deep thud coming from afar when a macaque moves through the trees. Sometimes you hear noises you don’t recognize, and that is part of the magic: the forest seems to watch you and speak to you.
There are many animals you might encounter, and they often appear when you least expect it. Monkeys are among the most common: long-tailed macaques and sweet-eyed langurs, observing visitors from a distance. If you’re lucky, you might see the slow loris, a small, nocturnal primate with a round face.

On the rocks and along the path, it’s easy to come across large monitor lizards, walking slowly but imposingly, and geckos of all sizes. On the lower branches, you find non-aggressive snakes like the reticulated python or the green vine snake, so thin it looks like a living vine.
Enormous hornbills pass noisily through the sky, and on the ground, you can see the footprints of wild boars and, much more rarely, the larger prints of the Malaysian tapir. Even if you don’t see it, you will almost always hear the presence of the gibbon: its morning songs spread like a vibrant echo across the entire valley.
When you reach a river or a waterfall, the sound of the water envelops you and brings immediate relief. The water is cool, almost cold compared to the air, and immersing yourself in it, even for just a minute, gives you a feeling of rebirth. It’s one of those moments that symbolically “stop time” during the trek.
The day often ends with an orange sky filtering through the tall trees, while the jungle changes its voice and the sounds of the night begin. In that moment, you truly understand how small you are compared to the cosmos that surrounds you, and at the same time, how much you are a part of it.
